There’s nothing more frustrating than watching water in your kitchen sink refuse to drain. Clogged kitchen drains are one of the most common plumbing issues in homes, often caused by improper disposal of waste. Grease, oils, fats, and food scraps are some of the common culprits behind kitchen drain clogs. Knowing what doesn’t belong in your drains is the first step toward preventing blockages. In the case of recurring drain clogs, we recommend turning to a professional plumbing service—DIY attempts can make things worse. At Express Plumbing & Rooter, we understand what goes into keeping your drains flowing smoothly. When you need professional drain cleaning, we are the plumbers in Los Angeles to call.
Unlike bathroom clogs, which are usually linked to hair, grooming products, and soap scum, kitchen sink drain clogs are directly tied to grease, oils, and food scraps. Unfortunately, many homeowners simply pour grease and oils down the drains and just turn on hot water, thinking these substances will flow all the way into the main sewer line. While hot water can melt fats, oils, and grease, these substances eventually cool down and solidify in the drain pipes. While it is convenient to pour grease and oil down the drain, it isn’t good for your drains. It’s advisable to dispose of these substances in the regular trash can.
Small food particles might seem harmless, but dumping coffee grounds, pasta, rice, flour, and eggshells down the kitchen sink drain can lead to blockages. Most of these food scraps clump together in your drain pipes and combine with grease to form stubborn clogs. They should be disposed of in the regular trash.
Grease, cooking oil, and fat are some of the biggest causes of kitchen drain problems. They may flow easily while hot, but they can cool inside the pipes and stick to the walls. Over time, that buildup can trap food particles and create a larger clog. Instead of pouring grease down the sink, let it cool and place it in a container before throwing it away. You can also wipe greasy pans with a paper towel before washing them.
Your kitchen sink is not designed to handle every type of food waste. Rice, pasta, coffee grounds, eggshells, and fibrous foods such as celery or onion skins can collect inside the pipes and contribute to blockages.
Before washing dishes, scrape leftover food into the trash or compost. If you use a garbage disposal, avoid treating it like a regular trash can. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and run water while it operates. Even then, it is best to keep large amounts of food waste out of the drain.
A sink strainer is a simple and inexpensive way to catch food particles before they enter your pipes. Empty it into the trash regularly instead of rinsing the debris down the drain.
This is especially helpful in busy kitchens where several people prepare meals throughout the day. A strainer will not stop grease buildup, but it can reduce the amount of solid waste moving through the plumbing.
When a kitchen drain starts slowing down, it may be tempting to reach for a chemical drain cleaner. However, these products are not always the best solution. Some can damage certain pipes, and they may not remove the underlying buildup. Avoid these products for the sake of your drain lines—do not fall for the advertising gimmicks that the manufacturers use.
If you have a recurring clog, a professional plumber can inspect the drain and determine what is causing the problem. Depending on the condition of the pipes, professional drain cleaning may be a more effective long-term solution.
While prevention is important, sometimes drains get clogged. Knowing when to call a plumber or take action can prevent severe backups and water damage. When you can spot the signs of a clogged kitchen sink drain, you can act quickly and clear it before it gets worse. Look out for the following signs and call a reputable plumbing service for help:
