Clogged drains are something most people deal with at some point. Whether it’s a slow-draining sink or a backed-up shower, it can be frustrating and messy. You may wonder if there’s a straightforward way to handle it without hiring a professional. One popular home remedy is using salt. It all comes down to this: performance. Try salt—it's a simple solution for minor blockages. For tougher clogs, though, you might need to call in a plumber for pipe or sewer repairs. If you’re dealing with ongoing problems, Express Plumbing & Rooter is a name many people trust when basic tricks aren’t cutting it.
Salt is more than just something to sprinkle on your fries. It’s a natural abrasive that can help scrub away gunk inside pipes. When combined with other items, such as baking soda or hot water, salt can sometimes help loosen buildup or small clogs caused by grease, soap scum, or grime.
Salt doesn’t break down clogs the way commercial drain cleaners do, but it can push buildup along and clear the way if the clog isn’t too stubborn.
Here’s a simple way to try salt for a minor clog:
This method can be especially helpful in kitchen sinks, where food particles and grease are common problems.
Sometimes, a clog is simply too large or too deep in the pipe for salt to be effective. If you’ve tried the salt method and the water still won’t go down, it might be a sign of something more serious. You could be dealing with:
In such cases, pipe repair in Burbank, CA may be necessary to resolve the issue permanently. If the problem extends beyond just one sink or shower and affects multiple areas of the house, sewer repair may be the most effective solution.
If you want to explore a few more options before reaching out to a emergency plumber, here are some other safe DIY methods:
However, remember that doing too much on your own can sometimes exacerbate the issue. If you're not seeing any change after trying a few safe fixes, it might be time to call in help.
Here’s how to tell when a clog might be hiding a bigger issue:
These signs often indicate that you’re past the point of simple salt fixes and may require a pipe repair job or even a sewer repair to correct the issue fully. In these situations, Express Plumbing & Rooter has experience dealing with both small clogs and major sewer line problems. They have the tools and expertise to identify the issue and resolve it correctly the first time.
This is a good question! Generally, salt is safe for most types of pipes when used in small quantities. However, it’s essential not to overdo it or use salt excessively. Salt won’t cause major damage on its own, but if you rely on DIY methods for too long without success, the clog might worsen.
The longer a clog sits in your pipe, the more pressure it can build. That can lead to leaks or cracks, which will likely require professional pipe repair by Express Plumbing & Rooter.
DIY tricks, such as using salt, can be a great first step. They’re cheap, safe, and easy to try. But they’re not miracle workers. If your drain remains clogged or starts to back up, don’t wait until it becomes a water damage or health hazard.
If your drain won’t clear or you notice signs of a more serious issue, it’s time to call the professionals. Express Plumbing & Rooter has the tools, training, and expertise to handle everything from simple clogs to comprehensive sewer repairs. Stop guessing and start fixing. A fast, expert visit could save you time, money, and a lot of stress.

Let me tell you folks what I went through last night after I came home from a party I walked in my bathroom and saw the bathtub and toilet overflowing with black water so I immediately went online and found a company this company was express plumbing and router the girl on the phone was really really friendly and nice she assured me that my problem will be solved and I should have no worries the technician will be arriving in 60 to 90 minutes she told me well that was true because he was here in 45 minutes The technician came and unclog the drain for only amazing $55 when he came in to my house he was wearing booties so he said would not dirty my carpet that's a plus because I have white carpets in my house I would really recommend this company to my family and friends and whoever has a plumbing problem thank you express plumbing and rooter.
