Older homes are appealing for many reasons, including unique architectural styles, solid construction, and a rich history. Unfortunately, these homes could still be using a plumbing network that’s past its prime. If you live in an older home, it’s advisable to keep the potential plumbing issues that come with old properties in mind.

Express Plumbing & Rooter is a reputable plumbing company offering dependable plumbing services, including trenchless sewer line replacement, video camera inspection, hydro jetting, and many more. In this article, we will shed light on the common plumbing problems in old homes and the possible solutions.

  • Worn and Outdated Fixtures

Even the most durable plumbing fixtures aren't built to last forever. Materials degrade over time, and what was once cutting-edge technology can become outdated and inefficient. As a result, fixtures installed decades ago may no longer function at their peak performance. They may use more water, be prone to leaks, or lack modern features that enhance convenience and water conservation. If you live in an older home, call a trusted plumbing repair service to inspect your faucets, showerheads, and toilets. Upgrading your fixtures can save water and money on your water bill.

  • Rusted Galvanized Pipes

Galvanized steel pipes were commonly used in homes built between the 1930s and 1960s. If your home was built during this time, there’s a good chance you have rusted galvanized pipes. These pipes rust over time and cause many problems, including low water pressure, water contamination, leaks, and many more. But how can you know if you have galvanized pipes in your home? Look for exposed pipes around the basement, crawlspace, or beneath sinks. Galvanized pipes have a dull gray or silver color, sometimes with a slightly bumpy texture. These pipes should be replaced with copper or PEX pipes. Reach out to a qualified plumber that specializes in trenchless sewer line replacement for professional recommendations.

  • Improper Installation or Repair

Over the years, your home's plumbing may have been subjected to poor repairs or low-quality installations. This is especially true if the previous occupants neglected routine maintenance. These can lead to leaks, clogs, and other problems down the road. If you suspect you have faulty plumbing work, it's advisable to have a qualified plumber inspect your plumbing and make the necessary repairs or replacements.

  • Faulty Sewer Lines and Tree Root Intrusion

Decades-old sewer lines become increasingly vulnerable with age. The materials they're made from can deteriorate and crack, opening the door for leaks that waste water and potentially contaminate your property. Besides, these aging pipes are more susceptible to clogs caused by built-up sediment, mineral deposits, and even tree root intrusion. This can lead to slow drainage, backups, and unpleasant odors. The common signs of a sewer line problem include slow drains, gurgling sounds, and sewage backups. If you suspect a sewer line problem, call the experts at Express Plumbing & Rooter for professional sewer repair.

  • Slab Leaks

If your plumbing pipes have seen better days, there is a risk of slab leaks. These leaks occur in the pipes that are buried beneath the concrete slab. Signs of a slab leak include warm spots on your floor, cracks in your foundation, and high water bills. Slab leaks can be very expensive to repair, so it's important to call a plumbing repair service for leak detection if you suspect one.

  • Frequent Sewer Line Clogs

Older sewer pipes are more prone to clogs than newer pipes. This is because they have been accumulating hair, soap scum, and other debris for years. If you have frequent clogs, you may need to have your pipes cleaned or replaced. Get in touch with a professional plumbing company that specializes in sewer line cleaning for a comprehensive inspection.
