If your toilet has been breaking down frequently in the recent past, you may be wondering whether you should continue repairing the fixture or replace it. Perhaps the toilet won’t stop running, it wobbles all the time, or you’re dealing with persistent leaks.
A malfunctioning toilet can render your bathroom unusable, cause nonstop frustration, and even increase your water bills if it runs continuously. While repairs handled by a professional plumber can restore proper functioning, it reaches a point when you have to replace the toilet altogether. For instance, visible cracks in the bowl or tank cannot be repaired—the best course of action is to replace the toilet.
Express Plumbing & Rooter is a local plumbing company that specializes in toilet repair and replacement. Let’s look at when repairing your toilet makes sense vs. replacing the fixture.
Most toilet issues are relatively minor and inexpensive to fix. Components inside the tank naturally wear out over time. These parts are affordable and can often be replaced multiple times without any problem. If your toilet is running continuously, not flushing properly, or making unusual noises, repairing these internal components is usually a practical solution.
You can repair these smaller parts several times throughout the life of the toilet. In fact, routine maintenance can help extend the fixture’s lifespan.
Toilets last 15 to 25 years, depending on quality and maintenance. If your toilet is relatively new and experiencing minor issues, repairing it makes sense. However, if it’s approaching the 20-year mark and repairs are becoming frequent, replacement may be the more cost-effective option. Installing a new toilet will save you the trouble of repeated breakdowns and give you peace of mind.
Older toilets are also less efficient. Many models manufactured before the mid-1990s use 3.5 to 7 gallons of water per flush, compared to modern high-efficiency toilets that use 1.28 gallons or less. If you’re repairing an older unit repeatedly, you may be missing out on water savings by not upgrading. Reach out to a nearby plumber specializing in toilet installation to help you upgrade your toilet.
There’s no fixed number of times you can repair a toilet, but a good rule of thumb is to evaluate the cost of each repair. If a single repair costs close to half the price of a new toilet or if multiple repairs in a short period add up, it may be time to replace it. Recurring clogs, persistent leaks at the base, or constant running despite multiple part replacements are signs that the toilet may be nearing the end of its service life. These are common signs when toilets are past their prime.
It’s important to distinguish between replaceable components and structural problems. Internal tank parts are inexpensive and easy to swap out. However, if the porcelain bowl or tank is cracked, the base is unstable, or the flushing mechanism is outdated and inefficient, replacement is usually the better choice.
Cracks in the porcelain can lead to water leaks that damage flooring and subfloors. A leaking wax ring at the base can also cause hidden water damage and mold growth if left unresolved. While replacing a wax ring is affordable, repeated base leaks could be a sign of a deeper installation issue. Call a local plumbing service to evaluate the condition of your toilet and offer recommendations.
If you’re dealing with frequent toilet headaches, the time has probably come for a replacement. Before you do, however, it’s a good idea to contact a professional plumber to conduct an inspection and determine the condition of the toilet. The team at Express Plumbing & Rooter is here to help you with a range of services, including toilet replacement, clog removal, tank replacement, and more.
